unknown women, late 18th century – print on canvas

i am deeply moved by the melancholic atmosphere that surrounds portraits of unknown people.
think of the effort that went into paintings that were supposed to look like the people portrayed – ideally in a flattering way.
were the portraits made to mark a memorable event? or should they help realize the ambitions of the persons portrayed or their families? were the attempts successful?

i layered portraits of unknown women from the late 18th century and merged them into an "afterimage" that bears similarities to each of the originals and probably also resembles other forgotten individuals from that period ...
